The first graders have been hard at work this week. :) Here's a look at what we covered in class.
- We are wrapping up our first unit of the Reading Workshop curriculum. The kids have learned so many great reading habits over the past few months. They now know different strategies for decoding unfamiliar words, how to have meaningful conversations with a reading partner about the books that they read, and how to make the most of their reading time. Every time that I sit with the students to read with them, I am impressed with the strategies they employ. Amazing! On Monday, we will begin the next unit which focuses on nonfiction texts.
- The trick words this week are: from, have, do, does
- We also began the next module in the Eureka Math curriculum. It is centered around learning place value through addition and subtraction within 20. Yesterday and today, the first graders practiced making 10 to add 3 numbers. For instance: 6+4+3 becomes 10+3=13. They have been drawing pictures, using number bonds and 10 frames to show their work.
- In writing, they learned to "show, not tell" in their writing by including feelings and thoughts in their writing. They will also use drama to bring their stories to life. The "small moment" stories are adorable and I can't wait to share them with you.
- The science lessons for the week centered around the stars. The kids are answering the question "Why do stars come at night?" We will also read a story tomorrow called How can stars help if you are lost?
- I hope you all received your Thanksgiving Show invitation. As I mentioned in my email earlier this week, the kids will perform a short and sweet Thanksgiving show at the school on Wednesday, 11/27, at 9:00am. Families are invited to attend.
- I read a couple of stories about family traditions at Thanksgiving and the kids wrote about what they are thankful for. We created a Thankful Tree that is in the hallway outside of the classroom.
- I have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the kids each day and they are riveted. It's one of my favorites!
I sent home a fun activity where the kids and create a disguise for the Thanksgiving turkey. This is always a cute craft. It's not due until Monday, but a couple have come to school already - a cat and Pikachu. Love them!
